You Make Me Smile

I've been beaten down, punch-drunk, and barely beat the count
I've been here and there, said I would then when I should, I won't
I've also been thinking carefully about this for a very long while
Ever since you came into my life, honey, you make me smile.

I've made promises, broken hearts, and was sometimes not a nice guy
I've made small children, beautiful women, and even grown men cry
I've made lots of money and lost it, so now I don't even have a coil
But you make me believe in me, and baby, you make me smile.

I've been verbally abused, ridiculed, and made out to be a joke
And the worse it became for me, the better it got for some folks
You said, in my shoes you'd willingly walk one thousand miles
And in understanding the meaning of that, sugar, you make me smile.

I've been hurt, tricked by a jerk, and missed work for I was sick
I've been called slow poke and turtle turd because I was not slick
You came in slow and helped me fast with openness and not guile
And in being selfless and caring, sweetheart, you make me smile.

Just thinking about my life so far, at times it's been truly tough
And because of that I expect the worst, having suffered some stuff
But being trustworthy, loving and kind, you are therefore the perfect foil
I'm so happy you are in my life; darling, you make me smile.

Now, when I go to bed at nights, I turn off the bed side table lights
I reach over for you my sweet love and hold you ever so tight
And I recall how you stood tall, as you walked slowly down the aisle
I am so proud to know you are mine; 'cause lover, you make me smile.
