Boys' and Girls' Championships Two Thousand and Nine
Will remain in my mind for a very long time
Not only because of KC's very thrilling victory
But also because of what that win revealed to me.
The crowd grows quiet in anxious anticipation
The outcome of the Championship is now down to one!
One final race that will make all the difference
Between an exciting victory and a loser's experience.
The mathematical fanatics can clearly be heard
KC with their injuries needs to finish at least third
For Calabar will definitely win the four by four
That's as simple as it gets - there's really nothing more!
Anything less and the great College is done
Since Calabar can't lose - well, they've already won!
The gun goes off, the expectant crowd goes wild.
The prediction is on track - well, at least for a while.
KC's injured runners anxiously watch from the side lines
Their team mate is in sixth place - trailing too far behind!
Calabar will win Champs by just one point or two
There's really nothing that the famed Purples can do.
Rabalac frenzied supporters are beside themselves
Their team has lead for three laps - trophy is on the shelf!
Because surely the result is a foregone conclusion
Their best runner is the anchor - nothing can go wrong!
But KC and their hopeful supporters are not yet done
All the guys know they will have to run them down
For this is Boys Champs -it is not a two-team race
They must not lose faith; just keep up with the pace.
And as life would have it, cruel fate, she steps in
There's a spill, Calabar is third - they did not win!
The KC boys kept themselves in this amazing race
And the Fortis team finished a creditable fifth place.
The thrill of victory shifts from one side to the other
KC's ecstatic fans dance, hug and hi-five one another.
It is never truly over until it's really over
And unless you stop running, you're never a loser.
And that's why KC's victory means so much to me
It opened my eyes and allowed me to see
Life is a race, where the lead changes all the time
Sometimes you are ahead, sometimes you fall behind.
Some runners will take winning the race for granted
Then lose it all when their victory bid is supplanted.
Then there are those who put out very little effort
And expect to win; not knowing what victory is worth.
Still there are others who commit further transgressions
Quite honestly however, just too numerous to mention
But the lesson still remains - even if you run and you drop
You will never be a loser, unless my friend, you stop!
Fortune they say will always smile upon the brave
He will never be buried in a coward man's grave
And even if he falls, the brave man will never yield
He will have to be carried from any battlefield!
So take the lessons of Champs Two Thousand and Nine
Use it in your life, and keep it in your mind
Good things can really happen against all the odds
Just you keep the faith my friends, and trust in our God.
